Law Society Statement on Zimbabwe

The Law Society of Namibia condemns the ongoing violations of human rights and the rule of law on the part of the Zimbabwean Government against ordinary citizens and lawyers.

The Law Society of Namibia remains extremely concerned by reports that the people of Zimbabwe continue to be assaulted, harassed and threatened.

The Law Society of Namibia again calls upon the Namibian Government, the African Union and the Southern African Development Community to take up this issue as a matter of urgency with the Zimbabwean Government in the interests of peace and the protection of human rights and democratic values in our region. We call upon the Zimbabwean Government to respect the human rights of its citizens as well as the rule of law.

This denigration of democracy puts our continent and its leadership in a bad light. It is a repetition of historical atrocities that have no place in modern Africa.
